Choose the Right Tree

Not every tree fits every yard. Start with what you want the tree to do—shade a patio, brighten a corner, screen a property line, or produce fruit. In Northeast Ohio, we also plant with our winters, clay-heavy soils, and Zone 6a/6b conditions in mind.

Here’s how our expert growers group the trees we carry:

Shade Trees

Large-canopy trees for cooling, energy savings, and long-term structure. Maple, Oak, Beech, and Linden are all top choices. Plant them where they have room to reach mature size, usually 30 to 50 feet from the house.

Ornamental Trees

Smaller trees grown for flowers, bark, or fall color. Japanese Maple, Magnolia, Dogwood, Redbud, and Crabapple all thrive in Northeast Ohio yards and add year-round interest without overwhelming the space.

Evergreen Trees

Year-round green, wind blocking, and privacy screening. Spruce, Pine, and Arborvitae hold up well through our winters and give the landscape structure when everything else is dormant.

Fruiting Trees

Apple, Peach, Pear, and Cherry all grow well here with the right variety selection and pollination partners. Ask our team about disease-resistant varieties suited to Northeast Ohio’s climate.

FAQs About Trees in Ohio

Fall is the best time to plant most trees in Northeast Ohio. Cooler air temperatures reduce stress on the tree while the soil stays warm enough for roots to establish before winter. Spring is the second-best window. Container-grown and balled-and-burlapped trees from our nursery can be planted anytime the ground isn’t frozen.

Trees that handle Zone 6a/6b winters and heavier clay soils do best here. Reliable choices include Red Maple, Sugar Maple, Oak, Serviceberry, Redbud, Dogwood, Crabapple, Spruce, and Arborvitae. Most trees we carry are grown at our 4,000+ acre nursery in Lake County, so they’re already acclimated to our regional climate.

Large deciduous trees give the fastest, densest shade. Maple, Oak, Linden, and Beech are the strongest choices for Northeast Ohio yards, with mature canopies wide enough to cool a patio or lower home cooling costs. Plant them 30 to 50 feet from the house to accommodate their mature spread.

Newly planted trees need about 1 inch of water per week during their first growing season, delivered slowly at the root zone. In hot or dry stretches, check the soil a few inches down. If it’s dry, water again. Continue supplemental watering through the first fall until the ground freezes.
