About the Redbud Tree

This attractive and native family of trees displays vibrant, almost neon violet to pink-lavender blossoms in spring then unveiling its bold, heart shaped foliage of green to burgundy to multicolor that adds rich texture to the landscape through autumn. Redbuds are considered to be small to medium size trees with low branching and a spreading, open, rounded crown. Newer varieties may have more compact habits and weeping forms. They prefer some protection from hot sunny areas, but can be used as street trees, front yard specimen, and in a mixed landscape border.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week the first year. Prune in spring immediately after flowering to control size, and remove stray shoots or damaged limbs anytime. Feed early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
