About the Cherry or Plum Tree, Ornamental

There are many varieties of ornamental Cherry and Plum trees and shrubs to choose from including upright oval to spreading rounded forms and weeping varieties. All types are beautiful spring bloomers covered with fragrant, white or pink, single or double flowers followed by green to bronze to burgundy foliage (Plums). They make wonderful focal points, specimen plants, and early pollinator attractants. This family includes Flowering Almonds, Sand Cherries and many more.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week the first year. Prune in late winter to control size and form or after flowering. Remove dead or damaged stems at any time. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
