About the Fruiting Plum Tree

Plum trees produce beautiful spring flowers and sweet, juicy fruit from late summer into early fall. Most plum trees reach 12-16 feet tall with a spreading, rounded shape. The most commonly grown plums are European (Prunus domestica) and Japanese (Prunus salicina). European plum/prune varieties are self-fertile producing smaller, sweet, firm fruit that can be eaten fresh or dried into prunes. These varieties are later blooming, producing in late August/September, and are very cold hardy. Japanese plum varieties require another Japanese variety for best yileds producing larger, sweet to tart, juicy fruit most commonly found in the grocery store. These varieties are earlier blooming and fruiting, thriving in protected, drier environments. Though some are considered self-pollinating, most varieties benefit from a second compatible tree nearby to boost pollination and fruit production. Plant plum trees in full sun, well-drained soil, and with plenty of space for good air circulation to help prevent disease. Plums grow at a moderate rate and typically start bearing fruit in 3 to 4 years. Annual pruning in late winter helps keep the tree open and productive.

The best way to control reoccurring insect and disease problems on fruiting trees and shrubs is with a treatment schedule, starting as early as March. Learn more about a fruit tree treatment schedule. View our online selection of plum tree varieties available now.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, nutrient rich, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week the first year. Prune in late winter to control size and form or after flowering. Remove dead or damaged stems at any time. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. A regular spraying schedule to reduce insects and disease is recommended.
