Lawn Fertilizer

4-step program to

feeding your lawn

Feeding your lawn regularly is the best way to keep it looking lush, green, and looking healthy. Angelo recommends feeding the lawn four times each year, using a formulated 4-step program, being careful not to miss the most important fall season application. DIY programs available at Petitti’s are quick to purchase, easy to apply, and cost-effective. In fact, purchasing an entire year-long, do-it-yourself lawn food program from Petitti’s costs roughly the same as one single application from a costly lawn care service. And, our selection gives you the freedom to choose products ranging from traditional to organic, and we offer fertilizers tailored to support new grass seed, control weeds, and more.

  • Scotts® 4 Step® Program

Grow a yard worthy of cookouts, kids, pets, and play with this 4-step program, and save up to 75% of the cost of neighborhood commercial services by doing it yourself. For best pricing and to be set for the entire growing season, Angelo recommends purchasing the full program each spring. Individual bags representing each step are also available for purchase throughout the season. Available in 5,000sqft and 15,000sqft sizes. Step 1* is applied in early spring, when temperatures are still cool, to prevent crabgrass before it germinates and to green up a winter-weary lawn. Apply Step 2 in late spring to kill perennial broadleaf weeds like dandelions while also nourishing the lawn. Step 3 occurs mid-summer to strengthens the lawn against heat and drought. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, apply Step 4 in early fall to add a layer of winter protection and to replenish nutrients for the best start next spring. *If seeding this spring, choose the alternative first step, Step 1 for Seeding. This version is specially formulated to support newly germinating grass seed while still working to prevent undesirable crabgrass.

  • Espoma® Organic® Lawn Food

If organic is your preferred method of lawn care, choose this alternative 4-step program for a chemical-free lawn that’s affordable and safe for kids and pets. Using no pesticides or synthetic ingredients, the program employs organic matter to improve your soil while providing long-lasting nutrition. In fact, it contains 2.5X more slow-release nitrogen than the leading synthetic program. That means longer-lasting organic matter that won’t burn or leach away, and you won’t have to mow your grass as often. Each product covers 5,000 sq. ft. Apply the Spring Lawn Booster in early spring to green up the lawn and add calcium that strengthens the lawn and protects it from disease. All Season Lawn Food can be applied late spring to add long-lasting nutrition that also incorporates Espoma’s Bio-tone formula while maintaining green color. Apply the Summer Revitalizer mid-summer to support a deep green lawn with a boost of iron. Finally, use the Fall Winterizer with potassium to help the lawn recover from summer and replenish nutrients that will support growth next spring.

  • Espoma® Organic® Lightning Lime™

Frequently recommended by Angelo as a key soil amendment for the vegetable garden, flower beds, and the lawn, Lightning Lime is used to adjust soil pH quickly, in a matter of 6-8 weeks. Applying lime helps to raise acidic soil up to a level where the grass roots can better absorb the nutrients that are applied during lawn fertilization. It can be applied the same day as any fertilizer or seed and is safe for kids and pets.

  • Milorganite® Slow-Release Nitrogen Fertilizer

Celebrated as one of the nation’s oldest recycling efforts, Milorganite is also one of the oldest branded fertilizers on the market, composed of heat-dried microbes that have digested the organic matter in wastewater. The way it’s sourced: Microbes digest the nutrients found in the water, the cleaned water is returned to its freshwater source, and the remaining microbes are then kiln-dried into small pellets and bagged for sale. Proven to be highly effective, Milorganite is all-purpose in that it can be used safely on lawns, flowers, vegetables, trees, and shrubs, as well as a carrier when spreading lawn seeds. It contains virtually no salts and so cannot burn plants. Plus, it does not require watering in and feeds up to 10 weeks. With the increasing popularity of environmentally-friendly, sustainable practices, consumer demand for Milorganite can outweigh production, which is completely dependent on the “raw materials” in the region where it’s made. Petitti’s is currently the only place you can find and purchase it in Northeast Ohio. Purchasing and storing for later use is okay, as Milorganite does not expire when properly stored in a cool and dry area.
