Early Spring Perennials (March & April): When the snow begins to melt and the soil begins to thaw, these spring beauties slowly emerge to brighten our gardens and our spirits, but they often fade once summer heat sets in. Combine any of these perennials with your favorite spring blooming bulbs for a long-awaited spring show.

Lenten Rose

Lenten roses are one of the first blooms to appear each spring, and with flowers lasting until June, they’re among the longest-blooming perennials in Northeast Ohio. Also known as Hellebores, these early-season standouts check all the boxes — shade tolerant, excellent deer-resistance, evergreen, and an early-season food source for pollinators. Plant them in a shady spot and enjoy their gorgeous display for years to come.

May is when many of our best, most reliable perennials get started! Unlike our favorite spring ephemerals, these perennials enjoy the warm weather and remain for much of the summer.

From landscape staples like Catmint and Dianthus to uniquely-blooming beauties like Lupine and Baptisia, there are so many fantastic options to add color to the landscape in May.

The month of June is officially “Perennial Gardening Month” here in Greater Cleveland and it’s easy to see why! Many of our favorite long-blooming perennials show their beautiful faces this month and continually bloom throughout the growing season.

From Daisy family favorites like Blanket Flowers and Shasta Daisies to pollinator powerhouses like Daylilies and Lavender, there’s no shortage of bloom power throughout the month of June.

July & August

Things really start to heat up in the garden in the month of July and there are many perennials that thrive this time of year and continue blooming well into fall.

As May and June blooms fade, a quick round of pruning and fertilizing can usher in a second wave of fresh flowers. Mid-season favorites like coneflowers, Hardy Hibiscus, Black-Eyed Susans, and more carry the garden through the heat of summer.
