Helleborus spp.

lenten rose

About the Lenten Rose

A must have plant in the shade garden! These beauties form low mounds of leathery, dark, evergreen foliage from which large, single to double flowers bloom early spring, at the time of Lent. Flowers come in a variety of colors from purple, pink, yellow, cream and burgundy-red with markings and freckles. The blooms stay upright and fade gradually providing a long season of blooming interest spring through summer. Use in the woodland garden as excellent deer resistant color and texture. Look for the outstanding HGC Gold Collection varieties. View our online collection of Hellebores (aka Lenten Rose) varieties, and shop in store for the full selection.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Remove dead, dry foliage/flowers as needed. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in fall when necessary.
