About the Milkweed, Butterflyweed

A very important food source for Monarch butterflies, these perennial clumps of dwarf to tall, upright plants develop narrow to thick, green leaves where showy clusters of red, orange, yellow and rose pink flowers bloom. Plant in very well-drained soil, in sunny gardens or containers. Collect seed pods to sow the seeds in late summer. Shop our online selection of Milkweed.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained to dry, average to rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Remove and collect seed pods when green. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
