How to use Moss Poles

Moss poles are a versatile tool for houseplant growers, and extremely easy to install. They are most effective when installed in a container with a vining houseplant or with an epiphyte (a plant that grows in a non-harmful way on another plant like an orchid, fern, bromeliad, or air plant).

These supportive structures contain natural, moisture-retentive materials such as sphagnum moss and coir fiber, which helps climbers and plants with aerial roots secure themselves to the pole quickly and effectively.

How it Works

To start, select a pot with drainage that is approximately 1-4″ larger than your selected plant’s current pot so that it will have enough space to accommodate the granite block at the base of Mossify’s Original Bendable Moss Pole™. Position the pole as preferred, and begin filling in with potting mix, and tamping around the granite base. Remove the houseplant from its original container, gently separate the roots, and install the plant in front of the moss pole. Continue filling with soil as needed and tamping around the moss pole.

Now take the provided floral pins and the longest stem, and begin loosely pinning the stem. Pin at the base of the mole, midway along the vine, and near the top. Place pins at a 45° angle and push in firmly. Arrange the next longest to shortest stems as desired.

Many tropical foliage plants prefer to grow upward. When supported this way, they naturally produce larger, healthier foliage and, in some cases, increased fenestrations (openings or windows in leaves). Plus, growing plants vertically provides space savings. More houseplants fit into smaller areas and sprawling houseplants stay tidier.

Trailing Plant Families

Several families of houseplants grow remarkably well on moss and coir pole supports, including the sizable Philodendron family, fascinating Monstera, and practical Pothos. Other plants to consider: Ivy, Hoya, Arrowhead plant (Syngonium spp,), Rex Begonia, Inch Plant (Tradescantia spp.), Maidenhair vine, and popular, tropical-blooming vines like Mandevilla, Bougainvillea, and Jasmine.

Spray Misting

for healthy, happy plants

We recommend misting the moss pole, and your plants, 2-3 times per week. The rechargeable, continuous, ultra-fine Mossify Mistr™ is a great tool for this task. This creates a humid environment for your plants, which they’ll love, especially with the excess dry heat in the winter months! Another benefit of misting the pole regularly is that the plant’s soil will not dry out as quickly. As wit most plants, try to keep the pot soil evenly moist to slightly dry before thoroughly watering.
