Penstemon spp.

beardtongue

About the Beardtongue

Beardtongue produces long-lasting, tubular blooms of electric blue, bright pink, rich red, and violet purple on tall flower spikes. These plants are not fussy and grow best in sunny spots and dry soil. Plant with other hummingbird favorites or try them in a cutting garden.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer after removing spent flower stems to lateral buds. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary. Requires winter protection.
