About the Basil
Angelo’s Farm Market herbs are specifically selected for home growers to be productive, disease resistant, and flavorful. Look for the Italian classic ‘Genovese’, colorful foliage types of ‘African Blue’ and ‘Amethyst’, the dwarves ‘Mini Purple’ and ‘Spicy Bush’, variegated, non-flowering ‘Pesto Perpetuo’, and the mosquito repellent ‘Lemon’. Basil possesses tender, fragrant foliage that are perfect for pesto, Italian and Asian dishes, soups and salads. It’s tolerant of multiple cuttings, don’t be shy when it comes time to harvest, it simply grows back for an extended late season yield. Removing the flowers as they appear will result in the best flavor. Prefers consistent soil moisture.
Care Notes
Plant in sunny, well-drained, nutrient rich soil or containers amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week throughout the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, Osmocote® or Garden-tone®. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Harvest 1/3 of the new, tender foliage in the morning. Dry or freeze extra for future use. Remove flowers for better leaf production.
