About the Big Bluestem Grass
Also known as Turkeyfoot Grass, Andropogon is a Midwest native, warm season grass that produces clumping, upright, deep green foliage with red highlights in spring that turn purple-red to scarlet in summer to fall. The foliage is topped by burgundy flower clusters, (resembling turkey feet), in August. Big Bluestem are very tolerant of drought once established, their deep roots provide excellent erosion control, and can be planted near Black Walnut trees. Flowers can be cut and dried. Plant with other sun-loving natives such as Liatris, Coreopsis, and ninebark.
Care Notes
Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, average to poor soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Cut back as low as possible late winter/early spring. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
