Physocarpus opulifolius

ninebark

About the Ninebark

Fast growing, tough, upright rounded shrub whose foliage emerges in shades of chartreuse green, copper or dark chocolate-purple and holds this fantastic color well for three seasons of interest. Additionally, Ninebark produces 1-2″ wide, white to pink flower clusters in spring along with exfoliating brown bark in winter making it a year-round beauty. This native is adaptable to most soil conditions and durable in its uses as a natural screen, hedge, foundation plant and pollinator attractant. Care Notes

Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week the first year. Prune after blooming. Remove older stems from the base to keep plant attractive. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
