Air Purifying Houseplants

Studies show that tropical and flowering houseplants are powerful purifiers with the ability to filter common toxins from the air, which supports healthier living and overall well-being. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn about houseplants that are known for purifying the air and also easy to take care of. Peace Lilys and Spider Plants are fantastic for low light areas of your home. Philodendron and Ivy prefer medium-light areas of your home. Sansevieria (Snake Plant) are incredibly versatile when it comes to light - they'll do well in both low and bright light areas. If you notice dust on your plants, it mean's they're doing their job in cleaning the air! Be sure to wipe them off with a damp cloth often so they can continue to filter the air in your home!

Poinsettias thrive during the Holiday Season because they are short-day plants that require long nights to trigger their color change. With proper care and attention, poinsettias can be enjoyed year-round! How to Protect Bigleaf Mophead Hydrangeas for Winter

In Northeast Ohio, it's important to provide winter protection for your Mophead (macrophylla) & Oakleaf (quercifolia) Hydrangeas. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn how easy it is to protect your hydrangeas this winter! Macrophylla hydrangeas bloom on old wood, which means they set their buds and blooms in fall for the following spring. Due to our desiccating winter winds in Northeast Ohio, we recommend spraying your hydrangea with Bonide® Wilt Stop® to help seal in mositure and prevent the plant from drying out. Once the plant has been sprayed, wrap with burlap and mulch heavlliy around the base to provide extra protection.

Overwintering Fig Trees – Care & Protection

In Northeast Ohio, fruiting figs (Ficus carica) are a semi-tropical delicacy. Only marginally cold tolerant in Northeast Ohio, USDA Zones 5b-6b, figs die to the ground in temperatures below 20°F. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn three different ways to protect and overwinter your fruiting figs. Winter protection begins in late November/early December, (around Thanksgiving), when leaves drop after experiencing at least two hard fall frosts, (temps. below freezing, 25-31°F), indicating dormancy. At that time, potted figs can be wrapped in burlap and brought into an attached garage, or with additional protection, they can be placed outdoors against your home. Larger fruiting figs planted in the ground can be individually wrapped, or laid down and covered with burlap, insulated blankets, and heavy-duty tarps. Arborvitae are fantastic plants for full sun to part shade areas in the garden. They provide gorgeous year-round color and make fantastic privacy screens! The Western varieties are deer resistant and they require very little maintenance but they prefer well-drained soil conditions! Perennial Hibiscus (aka Rose Mallow or Hardy Hibiscus) are a fantastic, heat-loving plant for full sun areas in the garden. Native to our area, they produce large blooms in the late summer months that the hummingbirds love! Along with adding late-season blooms to the garden, there is so much more these Hibiscus have to offer. They are deer resistant, they require very little maintenance and they are tolerant of wet soil conditions!
