How to Start Fall Cold Crops In Containers From Seed

One of the most rewarding things to do in the garden is to grow your own food! We did a video earlier this year about why spring is an excellent time to start growing living salad greens along with other cold crops. Did you know fall is also a fantastic time to start cold crops, such as lettuce, in containers? Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about refreshing your lettuce in bowls by sowing new seeds. The great thing about lettuce bowls is that they regenerate every 7-10 days so you can enjoy fresh, homegrown lettuce weekly! Add in a few more containers of various mixed greens such as Kale, Romaine & Escarole and you can continue to grow and harvest fresh, healthy greens for your meals every night, all season long!

How to Plant And Care For Fall Mums So They’ll Grow Back

One of the most common questions when it comes to fall mum planting is, “are they hardy”? While they aren’t as hardy as they used to be, there are quite a few ways to protect them through the winter to ensure the best chance of success with keeping them around. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how and when to properly plant and protect your mums so they’ll grow back! Keep in mind, mums take 6-8 weeks (before a freeze) to establish their root system. Another key think to remember when wintering over mums, don’t prune them back! The stems will collect leaves which will help protect the plant through winter.

Earlier this year we talked about how to prune Panicle Hydrangeas during the winter months to promote new growth in spring. Did you know you can also prune Panicle Hydrangeas for a second time at the beginning of summer? Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, as she shows how to promote fresh, strong growth by pruning a Panicle Hydrangea in early summer. Yes, it will delay the flowering of the plant, but the new buds and growth will be much stronger and healthier. Pruning Hydrangeas in this way prmotes interior strength and branching which in turn helps support the numerous blooms it produces.
