Night temperatures are warming up so it's time to start planting the garden! Check out AJ's tips for spacing, planting and maintaining your garden this year. Applying a weed barrier at the beginning of the season might be extra work, but AJ highly recommends taking this step to save time and maintenance in the summer months! One of the keys to a successful garden, among proper spacing and crop rotation, is properly amending the soil to provide nutrients for your plants all season long.

One of the most rewarding things to do in the garden is to grow your own food! Early spring is an excellent time to start growing living salad greens along with other cold crops. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about growing harvesting lettuce in bowls. The great thing about lettuce bowls is that they regenerate every 7-10 days so you can enjoy fresh, homegrown lettuce weekly! Add in a few more containers of various mixed greens such as Kale, Romaine & Escarole and you can continue to grow and harvest fresh, healthy greens for your meals every night, all season long!

Spring Fertilizing

Early Spring is the perfect time to start fertilizing plants in the landscape. It provides much-needed nutrients as they begin to wake up and put on new growth. You can start feeding in late-March into early-April which will last all the way to mid-summer. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about what fertilizers we recommend for different types of plants along with the benefits of spring fertilizing. The 4 main fertilizers we recommend for spring fertilizing are Espoma Organic Holly-tone, Plant-tone, Bulb-tone and Bio-tone. Holly-tone is used for evergreens and any acid-loving plants while Plant-tone is used for deciduous shrubs and perennials. We recommend a nice feeding of Bulb-tone for your spring-blooming bulbs such as Daffodils, Tulips, and Hyacinth as their foliage begins to emerge. You can also apply Bulb-tone when you plant summer blooming bulbs like Gladiola and Dahlias. Spring is also one of the best times to add new plants to your landscape once the soil is workable and not soggy. For new plantings, we recommend adding Espoma Organic Bio-tone to the planting hole to help new plant material establish and expand their root system.

How to Prune Panicle & Smooth Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are one of the most popular, beautiful, summer-blooming shrubs! There are also a lot of questions surrounding how to identify and properly prune them. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how to prune Panicle Hydrangeas and why it’s best to prune them in early spring. In addition to pruning Panicle varieties such as Bobo, Little Lime, Limelight, Firelight, QuickFire, and Vanilla Strawberry, this is also the time of year to prune Smooth Hydrangea varieties such as Anabelle, Invincibelle Spirit, Incrediball, and Mini Mauvette. These types of Hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so it’s important to remove all of the old so that they have room to grow and push new, beautiful blooms all season long!

Spring Pruning Tips & Tricks

Early Spring is the best time of year to start cleaning up the garden and pruning shrubs and perennials! Some of the best tools to have on hand are hand pruners, loppers, a pruning saw and pruning shears. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how clean up your garden this spring by pruning shrubs, evergreens & perennials. Even though there are a lot of spring-blooming shrubs, such as Weigela that have already set their buds for this year, it’s still good to prune out old, dead, weak branches to promote growth and the overall health of these plants. Then, after their first bloom cycle, go back in and prune for shape and structure. With evergreens such as Juniper, now is the time to prune for shape and structure as they begin to push new growth. Remember, one of the best things you can do for your plants after pruning is to give them a healthy dose of organic fertilizer to promote new growth.

Hellebores Lenten Rose | Grow for Shade, Spring Blooms, & Deer Resistance

There are few perennials that can rival the multi-season interest of Hellebores. Often Called Lenten Rose or Snow Rose, these gorgeous plants begin producing flowers long before the rest of the garden wakes up! Blooms begin to emerge in the late winter months and continue through spring and into the summer months. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the benefits of growing Hellebores in your garden. Along with long-lasting blooms, there is so much more Hellebores have to offer. They are deer and rabbit resistant, they require very little maintenance and they are fantastic growers in shady spots in the garden! While they do prefer to grow in the shade, most varieties will grow well in sunny areas if the ground is consistently kept moist. If you prefer the delicate look of white blooms, look for Ivory Prince and Ice n’ Roses White. For pink blooms, check out varieties such as Pink Frost, Ice n’ Roses Red, and Merlin.

Likely the most low-light tolerant of all houseplants, Sansevieria not only provide striking architectural flair, they are also super easy to grow. If you have a brown thumb, this is the plant for you! They will impress you with their ability to look fresh despite low light, drought, and neglect. Also known as the Snake Plant or mother-in-Law’s Tongue, these plants have fantastic benefits including their air-purifying ability. These plants will tolerate just about anything you throw at them. They will survive in most light conditions, but we tend to lump them into the “low-light” category because there aren’t many plants available that tolerate those conditions as well as Sansevieria out in between watering and fertilizing on occasion.

Citrus | How to Grow & Care For

One of our favorite houseplants for continuous, wonderfully fragrant blooming is citrus! Along with making great indoor plants through the winter, they do wonderful in our Northeast Ohio climate outdoors through the late spring and summer months. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how to be successful with citrus. The key with growing citrus is making sure it gets plenty of light. If they don’t get enough light, they won’t produce any flowers or fruit. Remember to keep them on the dry side of watering by letting their soil dry out almost completely before watering. Once your citrus plant does begin to produce flowers and then small fruit, you ensure larger fruit growth by thinning out the bloom clusters.
