Deer Resistant Gardening Tips
Deer browsing is an ever-present issue in Northeast Ohio gardens. While no plant is truly deer-proof, there are many things you can do in the garden to help deter the deer and preserve your beautiful landscape. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, and Jason, Petitti team member and gardening expert to learn some of our favorite products and plants to deter deer. One of the best ways to keep the deer at bay is by installing a physical barrier, such as netting, fencing, or chicken wire. Another popular way to repel deer is by using specific deer repellants such as Plantskydd® granules and/or spray, Repels-All®, Liquid-Fence®, and the very fragrant Coyote Urine. For a more pleasing fragrance, I Must Garden® is a good alternative that uses herbal scents as opposed to blood meal. Remember, in rainy seasons it's important to re-apply repellants frequently so maintain the scented barrier. When searching for deer-resistant plants, Noelle highlights the key qualities to look for in finding plants that deer tend to stay away from, such as plants that are thorny, fragrant, fuzzy, leathery, or plants that produce milky sap.
