Lavender | Grow for Deer Resistance, Cut Flowers & Pollinators

Lavender is one of the most fragrant perennials you can plant with many benefits extending beyond its sweet scent. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the benefits of growing lavender in your garden. Along with beautiful blooms, there is so much more lavender has to offer. Lavender is considered to be deer resistant (yes, even in Northeast Ohio), and it's a great plant for repelling mosquitos! They prefer to grow in full sun environments, and they do well both in the ground and in container gardens. As with most perennials, we recommend fertilizing with @Espoma Organic Plant-tone® and Iron-tone® to provide nutrients for those showy blooms. For unique color, try varieties such as 'Ellegance Snow' and 'Ellegance Pink'. For more traditional varieties, try 'Blue Cushion', 'Big Time Blue', 'Hidcote Superior', 'Munstead' or 'Phenomenal'.

Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the importance of bees and what types of plants are the most beneficial to them. When we talk about attributes in plants that are beneficial to bees, look for flower colors such as pink, blue, white, and purple. Though there are a large number of plants that bees are attracted to, plants in the mint and daisy families are especially popular due to their nectar-rich blooms. From Shasta Daisy’s, Coneflowers, Catmint, and Coreopsis to Bee Balm, Butterfly Bush, Penstemon, and Yarrow be sure to have a mixture of host plants and nectar-rich plants for the bees to enjoy. Also, be sure to select plants for early, mid and late-season blooming to provide nectar for all pollinators, all season long.

Our second marker in the lawn care season is Memorial Day weekend. This holiday weekend typically signals warmer temperatures and different lawn maintenance requirements. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn what to do this time of year to prepare your lawn for success. Two key things this time of year are proper watering, and proper mowing technique. This is also the time of year to apply Step® 2 in a 4-step lawn fertilizing program. Remember, this step requires a different application process. The key thing to remember with this step is to ensure at least 24 hours of dry weather before watering so it has proper time to control weeds. You can spot control for weeds with products such as Weed Beater® Ultra, Weed Beater® Fe, and Chickweed Clover & Oxalis Killer. Prevent bug and grub issues with products such as GrubEx® or Ortho® BugClear.
