How to Control Japanese Beetles

There are many ways to prevent Japanese beetles from coming to your garden and prevent them from further damaging plants if they are already present in your area. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers to learn more about plants and products that can help repel, reduce or eradicate the problems caused by Japanese Beetles. When taking preventative measures, planning early in the season is key. It's important to begin with lawn care such as GrubEx® or Milky Spore Grub Control because they begin as white grubs in the lawn and mature to adult beetles in the landscape. If you're already experiencing issues with Japanese Beetle damage in the garden, we recommend trying sprays such as Bonide® Japanese Beetle Killer, Tomato & Vegetable spray, or Rose Rx 3 in 1 spray. The key thing to remember when spraying for Japanese Beetles is "see bug, spray bug". 👍

These rounded, deciduous shrubs have been bred to make a big statement in the landscape. Along with being a great deer-resistant shrub, Weigela are also fantastic pollinator-attracting plants for sunny spots in the garden! Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the benefits of adding Weigela to your landscape. Newer varieties are compact growers covered in green, burgundy, copper, and variegated foliage producing white to pink, rose to red tubular flowers that are repeat blooming. Weigela are easy, perfect performers for sunny small spaces, in containers, and as low hedges. As with most planting projects, we recommend fertilizing with Espoma Organic Plant-tone® and Iron-tone® to provide nutrients needed to establish a healthy root system.

Clematis | Grow for Repeat Blooms, Deer Resistance & Pollinators

Clematis are one of our favorite sun-loving, gorgeous, flowering vines that naturally twine around supports or can sprawl as a groundcover. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the benefits of growing Clematis in your garden. Along with beautiful blooms, there is so much more clematis have to offer. They prefer to grow in full sun environments, but the lighter colored varieties can tolerate partial shade conditions. As with most perennials, we recommend fertilizing with Espoma Organic Plant-tone® and Iron-tone® to provide nutrients for those showy blooms. Most of the varieties we grow at Petitti’s are award-winning varieties, bred by Raymond Evison. His Clematis varieties are vigorous, repeat bloomers, and grow 3-4′, perfect for patio pots, all the way up to 8′ tall. One thing to remember when growing clematis in your garden, they prefer to have their face in the sun and their feet in the shade. For gorgeous shades of purple, look for varieties such as Zara®, Fleuri®, Bernadine®, and Diamantina® (which also has beautiful double blooms). If you prefer pink flowers in the garden, check Charmaine®, Cherokee®, Abeline®, or Sarah Elizabeth®.

Blanket flowers are bold, native daisies that bloom in a mixture of hot colors including scarlet red, burnt orange to golden yellow. Along with being a great deer-resistant perennial, Gaillardia are also fantastic pollinator-attracting plants for sunny spots in the garden! They prefer to grow in full sun environments, and they are great plants for rock gardens. As with most perennials, we recommend fertilizing with @Espoma Organic Plant-tone® and Iron-tone® to provide nutrients for those showy blooms. For a pop of red, try varieties such as 'Arizona Red Shades' or 'Spintop™ Red Starburst'. If you prefer yellow, try 'Mesa Yellow' or 'Arizona Sun'.

From Grandiflora and Floribunda Roses to Shrub, Miniature, Hybrid Tea, and Climbing Roses, we have all of the information you need to help decide which variety suits your space best. Along with gorgeous blooms, there is so much more roses have to offer. Roses love as much sun as you can give them – we recommend planting them in an area that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Roses love to be on a good fertilizing schedule with products such as Espoma Organic Rose-tone® and Iron-tone® to provide nutrients for those showy blooms.

Lavender is one of the most fragrant perennials you can plant with many benefits extending beyond its sweet scent. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the benefits of growing lavender in your garden. Along with beautiful blooms, there is so much more lavender has to offer. Lavender is considered to be deer resistant (yes, even in Northeast Ohio), and it's a great plant for repelling mosquitos! They prefer to grow in full sun environments, and they do well both in the ground and in container gardens. As with most perennials, we recommend fertilizing with @Espoma Organic Plant-tone® and Iron-tone® to provide nutrients for those showy blooms. For unique color, try varieties such as 'Ellegance Snow' and 'Ellegance Pink'. For more traditional varieties, try 'Blue Cushion', 'Big Time Blue', 'Hidcote Superior', 'Munstead' or 'Phenomenal'.

How to Grow a Bee-Friendly Garden

Did you know that you can thank pollinators, especially bees for 1 out of every 3 bites of food you take? Bees are our most efficient and helpful pollinators! Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the importance of bees and what types of plants are the most beneficial to them. When we talk about attributes in plants that are beneficial to bees, look for flower colors such as pink, blue, white, and purple. Though there are a large number of plants that bees are attracted to, plants in the mint and daisy families are especially popular due to their nectar-rich blooms. From Shasta Daisy’s, Coneflowers, Catmint, and Coreopsis to Bee Balm, Butterfly Bush, Penstemon, and Yarrow be sure to have a mixture of host plants and nectar-rich plants for the bees to enjoy. Also, be sure to select plants for early, mid and late-season blooming to provide nectar for all pollinators, all season long.

Shasta Daisies (aka Leucanthemum) are classic, white petaled, sunny yellow centered daisies with a variety of sizes, petal types, and habits Along with being a great deer-resistant perennial, Shasta daisies are also fantastic pollinator-attracting plants for sunny spots in the garden! Along with their classic charm, newer varieties are bred for outstanding weather tolerance, repeat, superior blooming performance, and all-around easy maintenance. As with most perennials, we recommend fertilizing with @Espoma Organic Plant-tone® and Iron-tone® to provide nutrients for those showy blooms. For front borders in the landscape, try shorter varieties such as 'Snow Lady', 'Freak', 'Real Dream', 'Real Sunbeam', 'Snowcap', or 'Whoops-A-Daisy'. For medium-height varieties try 'Banana Cream', 'Goldfinch', 'Daisy May', 'Paladin', or 'White Mountain'. For tall varieties that also make great cutting flowers, try 'Brightside', 'Real Glory', or 'Becky'.

Coral bells are not only eye-catching foliate plants available in a rainbow of colors but also excellent cut flowers, where their stems of tiny white to pink to coral bells make an excellent, long-lasting filler in flower arrangements. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the benefits of growing Heuchera in your garden. Along with beautiful blooms, there is so much more coral bells have to offer. Similar to Hosta, they are perfect foliage for shade gardens and can even tolerate sunny spots in the garden and they require very little maintenance. Another thing they offer that we don’t find often in the shade garden is their bell-shaped flowers that attract hummingbirds! If you are looking for green coral bells, check out varieties like Electric Lime and Dolce® Appletini. If you prefer dark purple varieties, look for Primo® Black Pearl, Obsidian, Forever Purple, Plum Pudding, or Midnight Rose. Forever Red, Primo® Wild Rose, and Fire Chief are beautiful, vibrant red foliage plants. For more orange/rust color interest check out Peach Flambe or Caramel.
