Christmas Cactus | How to Grow, Care for & Propagate

Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how to care for Christmas Cactus year-round.

Christmas Cactus | How to Grow, Care for & Propagate

The Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera spp.) is an easy, long-living houseplant, and it’s also a pet-friendly plant, according to the ASPCA. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how to care for Christmas Cactus year-round. Christmas cactus grows best in bright, indirect light and average well-draining potting soil. Like most houseplants, Christmas cactus needs to be fertilized only during the April-September growing season. Pro Tip: Christmas cactus is one of the easiest plants to propagate, which is why cuttings are often shared with friends and family as new plant starts. After the parent plant is done blooming, identify a stem with three or more leaf sections and simply snap it off at the base. Stick the stem right back into moist potting mix, and it will soon root as a new baby plant. Voila, the gift that keeps on giving!

The Story of Petitti’s: 50 Years & Growing

Founded by Angelo Petitti in 1971, Petitti’s operates 9 locations serving the Cleveland, Akron-Canton, and Youngstown communities of Northeast Ohio. The story of the Petittis as told by the Petittis, this video takes you on a journey from Angelo’s humble beginnings to today, detailing the challenges and opportunities of running a family business over the course of 50 years, and illustrating the unique and special aspects, and European influences, that make it unlike any other garden center in the country. Viewers are introduced to the family members plus the greenhouse and farmland growing facilities, while gaining an understanding for what differentiates Petitti’s and powers the organization’s standards for quality, selection, and service. Petitti’s is a labor of love for 50 years and growing that has been supported by friends, family, employees, and the community and, ultimately, as Angelo says, “When I see people enjoying their day at the garden center, that is the thing that I enjoy. To me, that is the goal”.
