July is here and it feels like summer has finally arrived! Enjoy as Noelle shows you what's in bloom now at Petitti's. See some of our favorite annuals that thrive in the heat of summer, including Salvia, Pentas, and Petunia 'Bee's Knees'. The perennials department is also bursting with colorful blooms and the pollinators are out in full force! Noelle shares some of our favorite summer-bloomers like Shasta Daisies (Leucanthemum) and Astilbe. Plus, she shares a new combo that's sure to wow in a sunny garden bed. Pollinator Garden Tour

We visited a fabulous pollinator garden in Northeast Ohio, full of annuals and perennials sure to attract all types of pollinators! Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Manager with Petitti Garden Centers, to get a tour of a local NEO pollinator garden and to learn what plants you can start your own garden with! The most well-known pollinators include bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, though it is interesting (perhaps exciting or shocking, even) for many to learn that bats, moths, and beetles are also actors in the process of pollination. The three main things to remember when building the perfect place for pollinators in your garden is to have sources for food, water, and shelter. Some of our favorite plants for pollinators include Coneflowers (Echinacea), Cosmos, Ornamental Onion (Allium), Milkweed (Asclepias), and Butterfly Bush (Buddleia).

Perennial Lily Spotlight | Grow for Fragrance, Cut Flowers, & Pollinators

The Lily family is an enormous plant family and there is so much to love about them! The two main varieties of perennial lilies that we grow are Oriental and Asiatic lilies. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulture, and Education Manager with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about growing and caring for perennial lilies. These gorgeous, summer-bloomers develop tall, thick stems from a bulb that produces large, trumpet-shaped flowers in a rainbow of colors, some of which are very fragrant. For compact, tight-blooming varieties check out the Looks™ series including Looks™ 'Tiny Padhye', 'Tiny Double Dutch', 'Tiny Rocket', 'Tiny Pearl', 'Tiny Epic', and 'Tiny Nugget'. Remember, even though Lilies are fragrant, the deer love them so they need to be protected from browsing.

This classic plant family produces wonderfully fragrant panicles of white, pink, blue, and purple flowers in spring. SunPatiens® are incredible annual flowers, perfect for any space in the garden. That’s right, they thrive in any light exposure from full sun to full shade! Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Manager with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about SunPatiens®. This hybrid of two species is versatile, easy to care for, and provides non-stop blooms from spring to fall. At Petitti’s, we grow 14 different color varieties in addition to combination planters and hanging baskets. Along with their ability to tolerate various light exposures, SunPatiens® are also fantastic for attracting hummingbirds, resistant to downy mildew & disease, and tolerant of high heat and humidity. Bonus - they're self-cleaning and don't need deadheading, at all!

African Violet Spotlight | How to Grow, Propagate, & Care for Violets

African Violets, a.k.a. Saintpaulia ionantha, are one of the most popular flowering houseplants because they are easy to grow, tolerate average indoor conditions, and can flower throughout the year. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how to be successful with African Violets. According to the ASPCA, African Violets are a great pet-friently plant to have around! These plants prefer bright, indirect sunlight like you would recieve from a northern or eastern exposure window. Pro-Tip: African Violets can develop a long "neck" of the plant. If your flowers and foliage have extended out of the pot and started to flop over, we recommend removing some of the root base, repotting and burrying the "neck" so that only 1/2" is above the soil.
