Vigorous, productive and reliable, Black-eyed Susans are easily identified in the garden with their golden yellow petals surrounding a deep black eye. This no-fuss, powerhouse of a perennial needs only full sun & average soil to bloom prolifically summer through fall. Even better, this native plant family offers great deer & rabbit resistance, and some varieties self-sow vigorously to create a large, full, striking golden patch in next year's garden. ‘Goldsturm’ was voted Perennial Plant of the Year in 1999. Since then, several new, improved varieties have been developed, including 'Viette's Little Suzy', 'American Gold Rush', and Minibeckia™ Flame®.

Known for awesome blooming ability, adaptability and cold hardiness, the panicle hydrangea family is one of the easiest and low-maintenance flowering plants for the landscape. Available in both tree and shrub form, this deciduous plant puts on a stunning display of cone-shaped, cream or lime green to varying shades of pink flower clusters midsummer to autumn on new wood every year. For smaller spaces, try varieties like 'Little Lime®', 'Little Lime Punch®', and 'Bobo®'. For larger plants, try varieties like 'Fire Light®', 'Limelight®', 'Limelight Prime®', and 'Quick Fire®'.

Did you know you can change the color of Bigleaf (macrophylla) and Mountain (serrata) hydrangeas? It all starts with knowing what your soil pH is! Remember, it's important to continue to feed your hydrangeas in addition to applying products to change the pH level of your soil. We recommend using Espoma Organic Holly-tone® to fertilize blue hydrangeas and Plant-tone® to fertilize pink hydrangeas.

See some of our favorite annuals that thrive in the heat of summer, including Salvia, Pentas, and Petunia 'Bee's Knees'. The perennials department is also bursting with colorful blooms and the pollinators are out in full force! Noelle shares some of our favorite summer-bloomers like Shasta Daisies (Leucanthemum) and Astilbe. Plus, she shares a new combo that's sure to wow in a sunny garden bed. We visited a fabulous pollinator garden in Northeast Ohio, full of annuals and perennials sure to attract all types of pollinators! Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Manager with Petitti Garden Centers, to get a tour of a local NEO pollinator garden and to learn what plants you can start your own garden with! The most well-known pollinators include bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, though it is interesting (perhaps exciting or shocking, even) for many to learn that bats, moths, and beetles are also actors in the process of pollination. The three main things to remember when building the perfect place for pollinators in your garden is to have sources for food, water, and shelter. Some of our favorite plants for pollinators include Coneflowers (Echinacea), Cosmos, Ornamental Onion (Allium), Milkweed (Asclepias), and Butterfly Bush (Buddleia).

The Lily family is an enormous plant family and there is so much to love about them! The two main varieties of perennial lilies that we grow are Oriental and Asiatic lilies. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulture, and Education Manager with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about growing and caring for perennial lilies. These gorgeous, summer-bloomers develop tall, thick stems from a bulb that produces large, trumpet-shaped flowers in a rainbow of colors, some of which are very fragrant. For compact, tight-blooming varieties check out the Looks™ series including Looks™ 'Tiny Padhye', 'Tiny Double Dutch', 'Tiny Rocket', 'Tiny Pearl', 'Tiny Epic', and 'Tiny Nugget'. Remember, even though Lilies are fragrant, the deer love them so they need to be protected from browsing.
