About the Perennial Ferns

These shade loving garden staples vary in size, habit, and in frond color and texture. Cold, hardy ferns complement all shade tolerant annuals, perennials and shrubs. There are many varieties to chose from including the Autumn fern which unfurls into coppery-pink and peachy-bronze fronds come spring. Lady fern produces finely fringed leaves with darker red stems and veins. Ostrich is the largest fern of our collection, very tolerant of heat and some sun. Japanese fern is the lowest growing with attractive, multicolored fronds with purple and silver stripes.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary. Tolerant of some sun in moist soil.
