About the Ornamental Onion

This late spring to late summer blooming bulb family is steadily increasing in popularity. New varieties produce full clumps of green, to blue-green, onion scented foliage and a variety of spherical to cone to clustered blooms in shades of purple, pink, yellow and white. Flowers make and excellent addition to spring blooming bulb gardens, cutting gardens, and sunny containers.


Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer after deadheading or shearing to encourage new blooms. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
