Plant Spring Ephemeral Perennials for Early Season Blooms
Noelle shares some of our favorite Spring Ephemeral perennials that wake up, bloom, and thrive in early spring before fading as summer takes over.
This rock garden, alpine specimen forms succulent, mossy green, mats of mounded, evergreen foliage that becomes covered with short violet-purple stems upon which tiny, carmine-purple, pink and white flowers bloom in spring.
Plant in well-drained, gritty, slightly alkaline, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Shear spent flowers for a neat appearance and some reblooming. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring after flowering.
Combine with other rock garden plants like edelweiss, primrose, and English daisies.
