About the Japanese Silver Grass

Also known as Maiden Grass, this is one of the most popular ornamental grass families in the landscape with several beautiful shapes, sizes, colors, and varieties to choose from including striped and banded variegations. Miscanthus can be identified by it’s whisk-like inflorescence that is produced in late summer to late autumn. Clumps form very dense, mounded to upright to arching habits that make excellent garden specimen, hedges, can be used for cut and dried flower arrangements, and provides outstanding fall and winter interest. Care Notes

Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Cut back as low as possible late winter/early spring. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
