Aquilegia spp.

columbine

About the Columbine

Large, showy varieties of a native wildflower with playful, bicolor, red, pink, blue and white spurred flowers that face upward for everyone to enjoy, especially the early hummingbirds. Columbine is shade and moisture tolerant, therefore a perfect companion with woodland flowers, and in shady container gardens.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, nutrient light to rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer after deadheading spent flowers. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in late summer when necessary.
