Spiraea spp.

spirea

About the Spirea

This large family of small to medium size deciduous shrubs produces abundant clusters of white or varying shades of pink blooms over dense branching covered by small leaves of green, yellow and orange. The earliest bloomers are the “bridal veil” hedge type, followed by the lower, mounded varieties that are more colorful and repeat bloom. Spirea are wonderful pollinator attractants, excellent in mixed shrub borders, as hedges or in containers. Browse our selection of spirea varieties online.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week the first year. Little pruning needed; shapes itself nicely. Cut back to 1/2 its height in late winter to rejuvenate, and shear after flowering, promoting a second flush of growth and additional flowers. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
