How to Grow Panicle Hydrangeas

Light | Sun to Part Shade (4+ hours of direct sunlight per day). Panicle hydrangeas are the most sun-tolerant of all hydrangea types. They will tolerate full sun conditions, but might require a little extra water to maintain lush foliage and full blooms in the heat of summer.

Watering | Plant in an area with well-draining soil and provide 1-inch of water per week with a deep, thorough watering. If they begin to wilt, provide additional water—but not too much! They like moist soil, but they don’t like to sit in water. When watering, be sure to apply at the base of the shrub to keep foliage clean and reduce the risk of disease issues.

Add 1-2 inches of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, setting flower buds reliably every single spring, no matter what. Proper pruning and maintenance will reward you with fuller branching & growth, more blooms, and an overall stronger hydrangea

Early Spring | For both panicle trees and shrubs, prune branches down to a basketball size and shape in late winter (Feb-March). Also remove any dead, diseased, and damaged areas at this time.

Late Spring | Pruning at this time is optional. If your hydrangea typically produces large blooms that weigh branches down throughout the summer, a second pruning in late May/early June will reduce bloom size. Bloom time will be delayed, but you’ll be rewarded with an increased yield.

Summer | Cut for flower arranging & deadhead to encourage more blooms.

Fall | Only prune to remove dead, diseased, or damaged areas at this time. Leave dried blooms on the plant to provide winter interest and prevent desiccation from cold winter temperatures.
