How to Grow Oakleaf Hydrangeas

Oakleaf Hydrangeas

The most shade-tolerant of all hydrangeas, Oakleaf varieties truly shine in Northeast Ohio gardens. With their bold foliage, creamy white summer blooms, rich fall color, and exfoliating bark in winter, these native shrubs bring four seasons of interest to the landscape — and with a little know-how, they’re surprisingly easy to grow.

light & watering

Light | Oakleaf Hydrangeas grow best in part shade (4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day). They’ll still perform in deeper shade and produce gorgeous blooms, but they’ll be a little less prolific with limited sunlight. If they’re planted in a spot that gets more than 6 hours of direct sun, keep them well-watered to prevent leaf scorch.

Watering | Plant in an area with well-draining soil and provide 1 inch of water per week with a deep, thorough soak. If they begin to wilt, provide additional water — but not too much. They like moist soil, but they don’t like to sit in water. When watering, be sure to apply at the base of the shrub to keep foliage clean and reduce the risk of disease issues.

Add mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Similar to all hydrangeas, Oakleaf varieties need consistent nutrition to produce dense blooms. We recommend feeding with Plant-tone® and Iron-tone® twice a year to keep them healthy and blooming. Apply fertilizer once in spring, just as new foliage begins to emerge on the stems, and again in midsummer (mid-July to early August).

through the season

Similar to macrophylla hydrangeas, Oakleaf varieties produce blooms on old wood — meaning they set their buds on stems that are at least 1 year old. Pruning at the proper time is key to keeping these beauties blooming year after year.

Early Spring | Lightly prune when new growth starts to emerge in early spring. Wait until you see small green buds along the stems (typically mid-to-late March). Prune down to the uppermost growth on each stem. If buds persist all the way down the stem, no pruning is needed.

Midsummer | Not much pruning is needed midsummer! The beauty of Oakleaf blooms is that they can be left to dry on the plant for winter interest if desired. To remove spent flowers, follow the bloom down 1-2 leaf nodes and make the cut just above the next large leaf set or new bud growth.

If the plant is getting too large for its space, prune to reduce size (up to 50%) in July—it’s the only time of year to prune them heavily without affecting buds and blooms for the next season.

Fall | Only prune to remove dead, diseased, or damaged areas at this time. After August 1, Oakleaf Hydrangeas are developing buds that will set next year’s flowers; so, pruning hard at this time removes flower buds that would otherwise develop on healthy old wood.

what to know

Because Oakleaf hydrangeas set blooms on their stems in late summer for the following growing season, they benefit from winter protection during Northeast Ohio winters.

Once foliage drops in late fall, clean up around the base of the plant. Apply an anti-desiccant spray and wrap the stems with burlap to protect buds and blooms for the next season. Finish by adding a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plant. Remove burlap in early spring when new growth begins to appear.

& how to treat them

Deer Protection | While they’re considered rabbit-resistant, Oakleaf hydrangeas are not impervious to deer browsing, especially when new, tender foliage is emerging early in the season. Consider installing fencing, netting, or using deer repellents such as Plantskydd where deer browsing persists.

Leaf Spot | Overhead watering in sunny areas can increase the risk of leaf spot. To minimize problems, water at the base of the plant and avoid wetting the foliage. Ensure good air circulation by spacing plants properly and pruning as needed. If leaf spot occurs, remove and discard affected leaves, and be sure to sanitize your pruners both before and after use.
