Helianthus salicifolius

About the Helianthus, Willowleaf Sunflower

Willowleaf Sunflower (Helianthus) is a native Ohio perennial that provides late-season color and structure to the landscape. Narrow, willow-like, dark green foliage forms a dense, shrub-like mound from spring through summer. In fall, plants burst into yellow blooms, providing late-season interest for pollinators and seeds for songbirds. This deer-resistant perennial adapts well to clay soil and thrives in full sun areas with well-drained locations.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, moderate to nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone once in spring and again mid-summer. Remove spent flower stems down to lateral buds for reblooming. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
