About the Clematis

Gorgeous flowering vines that naturally twine around supports or can sprawl as a groundcover. Showy flowers develop at all different times of the growing season in a rainbow of colors, bicolors, single and double petals. Most of the varieties we grow at Petitti’s are award winning varieties, bred by Raymond Evison. His Clematis varieties are vigorous, repeat bloomers, and grow 3-4′, perfect for patio pots, all the way up to 8′ tall. Use as a “thriller” in the center of an annual mixed container, growing up a trellis, or plant at the base of an open shrub like Hybrid Tea Roses or Lilacs to cover their bare branches.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Cut back Clematis in early spring, down to the uppermost, new growth that develops, and clean out unproductive wood.
