Growing Perfect Peppers

Whether you have a small patio, balcony, or less-than-ideal soil, container gardening is an easy way to cultivate a thriving pepper harvest. With the right setup, peppers can flourish in pots just as well as in the ground—sometimes even better!

In this guide, we’re sharing everything we’ve learned from our own experience. We’ll cover the best container sizes, essential care tips, different pepper varieties and the benefits of companion planting—everything you need to know to grow healthy, productive peppers in containers.

Peppers like it warm, so it’s best to wait until early-to-mid June to plant them outdoors. We’ve experimented with growing different types of peppers (bell, Italian grilling, Romanian, Chili, Jalapeño) and found that all varieties grow exceptionally well in containers. Dark-colored containers are particularly effective, as they help warm the soil, allowing peppers to get a head start earlier in the season. Just be sure your pots have good drainage—peppers don’t like wet feet!

What you’ll need

  • Start with a pot at least 12” wide, 10-12” deep with good drainage 
  • Fill 75% full with Petitti Planting Mix, leaving space for proper watering
  • Add Espoma® Garden-tone® per package instructions and mix it into the top 2″ of soil to give them an initial boost early in the season

Companion planting is a simple way to boost the health and productivity of your container garden. One of our favorite companions for peppers is nasturtium, which acts as a natural trap plant—drawing in pollinators while luring aphids and other pests away from the peppers. We’ve been especially impressed by ‘Baby Orange’, a compact variety that blooms non-stop all season long.

Herbs like basil, parsley, and oregano also make excellent companions. They not only can help deter pests and encourage healthy growth, but basil, in particular, is said to enhance the flavor of peppers when planted nearby!

how to keep them growing

It’s true that peppers love the heat, but their fruit production can slow down during periods of drought. The best way to keep them going? Fertilize regularly and water consistently. In the heat of summer, peppers typically require daily watering. Increased watering can deplete nutrients more quickly in containers, so we’ve found that fertilizing once a month with a slow-release plant food like Espoma Organic® Garden-tone is optimal. Keep them from drying out, and you’ll continue to see strong production well into fall.

Over the course of the summer we experimented with growing a variety of peppers in containers to see how each one would perform. Six varieties of 3.5” Angelo’s Farm Market (AFM) peppers were planted, one at the center of each container, including ‘Big Bertha’ (bell), ‘Giant Marconi’ (Italian grilling), ‘Gypsy’ (Romanian), ‘Sweet Banana’, ‘Jalapeño’, and ‘Garden Salsa’ (chili). A divided, half-quart of Nasturtium ‘Baby Orange’ was added as a companion plant and spiller to each pot. The pots were backfilled with planting mix, leaving one inch of space for watering at the top. Watch as Noelle explains how to be successful with peppers in containers!
