Radio Show Recap
Colder weather has set back in for the next week or so, but there’s still plenty to be done in the garden to get it ready for spring! This week, Angelo gives advice for spring lawn care, starting cold crops indoors and pruning that should be done now. He also talks about managing issues with moles and voles in the garden as well as protecting the home against insects as the weather starts to shift. PLUS, he answers caller questions like “when should I prune my Wisteria vine”, and “what’s the best type of soil to use in my raised beds”?
Angelo’s Pruning Tips:
- Japanese Maple – Thin out the crown to open it up. Now is the best time to prune and shape.
- Weeping Cherry & Crabapple Trees – Thin out the crown to open it up. Now is the best time to prune and shape.
- Grapes – Trim down to the main stalk. Take every other side branch out, cut out every 3rd node, spray with Sulfur, train the vine on a fence or trellis.
- Clematis – remove all the dead wood around all the green buds,
- Wisteria, Honeysuckle & Trumpet Vine – Now is the time to cut them back to the shape and size you want it to be.
- Rose of Sharon – Cut these plants right down to about 3-4″ above the ground. They’ll stay fresh and come right back to bloom in summer.
