How To Prune Macrophylla Hydrangeas

Video Recap

Hydrangeas are one of the most popular, beautiful, summer-blooming shrubs! There are also a lot of questions surrounding pruning them in early spring. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how to prune, clean up and fertilize your Hydrangea in the spring to get the best results all season long. Check for signs of new growth at the tips of your hydrangea and new bud growth throughout the branches. Silvery skin is an indicator of a dead branch; prune these branches down as far as you can go. Prune the rest of your Hydrangea’s branches down to the uppermost point of growth. Finally, clean out any dead leaves or debris from the base of your hydrangea, fertilize with Plant-Tone® and Iron-Tone® or Holly-Tone® and you are ready to go!
