Radio Show Recap

This Week in Your Lawn & Garden

  • Feeding the Lawn | The upcoming Labor Day Weekend signals it’s time for the 4th application of lawn food. Apply Scotts® Step® 4 now to help the lawn recover from summer stress and strengthen roots before winter. WATCH September Lawn Care
  • Seeding the Lawn | Prepare the lawn for September renovation projects. Eliminate weeds by spot treating with WeedBeater® Plus. If weeds are out of control and you need to start over from scratch, kill off the lawn with a general herbicide like KillzAll™, and let it rest for a couple weeks before seeding a brand new lawn. READ Seeding the Lawn
  • Caring for Roses | Clean them up by deadheading them a bit and feeding them Rose-tone® or Plant-tone® now, and they’ll continue blooming right through November, especially shrubs roses. It’s best to avoid feeding after August because you risk them pushing too much tender new growth that won’t have a chance to harden off by winter, increasing the likelihood of winter die-back of stems. WATCH Late Summer Rose Care
  • Protecting Young Trees | Deer will soon be rubbing their antlers on small caliper trees, especially new trees, which can take off the bark and injure (even kill) the tree. Protect your trees with Treekote® vinyl tree wraps and spray with Plantskydd®. This will also prevent sun scald and cracks sometimes caused by the damaging NE Ohio winter freeze-and-thaw cycles.
  • Combatting Powdery Mildew | Hot, humid weather in prior weeks has driven the return of powdery mildew, which is now visibly affecting lilacs, peonies, tall phlox, clematis, squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, melons, and grapes. Remove the resulting burned/dried leaves from veggie plants. Apply Copper Fungicide routinely to address or stay a step ahead of it. SHOP Copper Fungicide
  • Drenching for Insects | If your magnolias, evergreens, or other trees & shrubs have been plagued by insects that are tough to treat with topical sprays (e.g. scale, bagworm, tent caterpillar, pine tip/pine shoot moths & more), fall is a great time to drench the base of the trees & shrubs with Bonide® ANNUAL® Tree & Shrub Insect Control. It’s a systemic control that’s taken in through the roots and provides protection against waves of major insect problems this fall through next spring. SHOP Insect Drench
  • Killing Grubs Fast | If noticing skunks or raccoons digging in your yard, or if seeing yellow turf damage, it could be a sign of grub infestation. Pull up 1 square foot of turf and, if you see a ten or more grubs, treat the lawn asap with BioAdvanced® 24 Hour Grub Killer. It’s too late in the season for GrubEx®. You can apply Milorganite® to boost nitrogen for your lawn, which also discourages skunks. SHOP 24-Hour Grub Killer
