Radio Show Recap
This Week in Your Lawn & Garden
- Watering Sufficiently | Make sure your lawn, gardens, and especially newly planted trees & shrubs are getting a good soaking of 1″ of water each week, whether by rainfall or irrigation. If plants wilt during the high heat of the day and don’t perk up by late evening, water them thoroughly to help them recover overnight. SHOP Watering Tools
- Tomatoes & Peppers | If you’re not seeing a lot of flowering or bees in the garden, pollinate your plants manually by going flower to flower with a Q-tip® or other cotton swab. Also use Bonide® Blossom Set Spray to help the flowers you have set fruit. For plants developing fruit now, apply Rot Stop® and remove the bottom leaves and/or any unhealthy leaves, which will help avoid blossom end rot on the finished fruit. WATCH Summer Tomato Care
- Supporting Roses | Feed roses with Rose-tone® one more time in late July / early August, and you’re pretty much set for the rest of the season. Prune spent blooms 3 nodes down from the flower and they’ll keep blooming well into fall. WATCH Summer Rose Care
- Dividing Perennials | August is a good time to dig, divide & transplant certain perennials like Daylily, Hosta, Peony, and Iris. Prepare soil in the new holes first. Re-plant at the same soil level (too deep and you’ll get foliage but no flowering next year). Water them well for 2 weeks, making sure they don’t dry up. WATCH Dividing Perennials
- Mitigating Plant Mites | Hot summer days are bringing out mites on bushes, roses, junipers, and many perennials. Fading or discoloration is a sign that you should check for them under foliage & branches. If found, spray BioAdvanced® 3-in-1 Insect, Disease & Mite Control inside the shrub and especially on the undersides of leaves. SHOP Mite Control
- Managing Lawn Pests | If seeing moths fly out of your lawn when mowing, treat the lawn with BugClear™ granules and water it in. This will also help eliminate ants, fleas, and ticks. SHOP BugClear™
- Controlling Crabgrass & Nutsedge | Don’t let new, midsummer sprouting of crabgrass and nutsedge persist, otherwise it will go to seed, blow in the wind, and remain present in the soil to germinate again (expanding the problem). Spot treat with Weed Beater® Plus Crabgrass to control crabgrass and Sedge Ender® to control nutsedge. SHOP Weed Controls
- Treating Summer Mildew | Hot, humid weather has brought on powdery mildew, which is now visibly affecting susceptible veggies like cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, and melons, plus the foliage of peonies, bee balm, clematis, and phlox. Treat veggies with Copper Fungicide and ornamentals with Fungonil™ or Infuse™. SHOP Disease Controls
