Angelo’s Radio Show — Season 31, Ep. 11

Radio Show Recap

This Week in Your Lawn & Garden:

  • Controlling Weeds | How to control or prevent weeds now:
    • Apply Scotts® Step 2 Weed Control plus Lawn Food early in the morning when dew is still on the ground (so it sticks) to kill dandelions and other broadleaf weeds in the lawn. Avoid rainy days that will wash it away!
    • Spot treat small patches of miscellaneous weeds in the lawn with Weed Beater® Ultra or Captain Jack’s® Lawn Weed Brew (these won’t hurt the grass).
    • In veggie & flower beds, treat weed with Captain Jack’s® Dead Weed Brew, but be mindful to protect desirable plants (it’s a non-select herbicide that will impact anything green it touches).
    • In flower beds, after you’re done planting & mulching, sprinkle Preen® to prevent new weeds from popping up during the season.
    • If you have grass growing through flowers in your garden beds, spray Ortho® Grass Killer to get rid of weedy grasses without injuring your ornamental plants.
    • SHOP Weed Controls
  • Keeping a Safer Lawn | Apply BugClear™ granules to kill harmful ticks, fleas, and other lawn insects. Eliminates the threat for up to 6 months. SHOP BugClear™
  • Caring for Hanging Baskets | The potting soil we use in our hanging baskets contains HydraFiber®, a natural, pulverized, shredded white pine material that holds water better, which may lengthen intervals between watering. Feed every 6 weeks with Osmocote®. WATCH Hanging Basket Care
  • Repelling Deer | Keep deer & rabbits from browsing by sprinkling Plantskydd® granules around plants as they emerge. Switch to Plantskydd® spray once plants have leafed out, and use as directed. READ Deer-Resistant Gardening
  • Warding off Veggie Insects | Protect vegetable & herb plants against chewing & sucking insects by spraying Captain Jack’s® DeadBug Brew a couple different times, a few days apart. This will help to keep cucumber beetles, squash borers, whiteflies, leaf miners, corn borers, potato beetles, cabbage moths, and more from taking up residence. SHOP Captain Jack’s®
  • Solving for Slugs | Look for slugs to be creating holes in Hosta leaves. Sprinkle Slug Magic® granules in a circle around susceptible plants to prevent damage caused by these slimy pests. SHOP Slug Magic®
  • Preventing Mildew | Start routinely spraying Bonidec Copper Fungicide now (before the hot weather starts) on Clematis, tall Garden Phlox, Roses, Bee Balm, Peony, and other susceptible plants to prevent the onset of powdery mildew. It is easier to prevent by spraying ahead than it is to control the problem once it shows up. SHOP Copper Fungicide
  • Planting Spring Color | Noelle listed a handful of plants that add color & texture to the garden in May…Perennials: Bleeding Heart (shade) | Clematis | Coral Bells (shade) | Dianthus | Ferns (shade) | Meadow Sage | Peony | Poppy; Trees & Shrubs: ‘Miss Kim’ Lilac | Rhododendron | Weigela.
