Carex spp.

sedge, carex

About the Sedge, Carex

Compact, mounded to low arching ornamental grasses that establish extremely well in shady gardens and containers. Carex also tolerate clay, moist to well-drained soils, and even some drier conditions. There are many colorful varieties with yellow, green and white variegation on thin to narrow and wider strap-like leaves. Sedges are perfect for containers, small spaces, and in the front of a border. Most sedge varieties are hardy perennials in Northeast Ohio, but they are a few that are considered annuals or tender perennials. One of our favorites is Carex buchananii ‘Red Rooster’ for it’s fine, spikey texture and bronze-red color that it retains all growing season! It looks fantastic in spring, summer and especially autumn containers. Browse our selection of ornamental, perennial Sedge grass varieties online.

Care Notes

Grow in part shade to shady areas, well-drained or evenly moist amended soil or containers. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, Osmocote® or Plant-tone®. Follow label instructions. Cut back in early spring as low as possible. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
