Juncus spp.

rush, corkscrew & straight

About the Rush, Corkscrew & Straight

These warm season, clump-forming grasses possess wiry, green to blue green, stick-straight or twisted foliage. They combine well in mixed container gardens as a “thriller” or “filler”. These are cold hardy, perennial grasses that prefer part sun and moist soil, but can grow in any light exposure if its soil stays moist. They grow wonderfully near pond margins and in rain gardens, and will spread by rhizomes and seeds.

Care Notes

Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Cut back as low as possible early spring. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary. Control their spread by rhizomes by planting in a container, in the ground.
