Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'

purple fountain grass

About the Purple Fountain Grass

A very popular annual grass variety with glossy, burgundy foliage, showy, reddish plumes and upright fountain habit. This is an annual grass, winter hardy in zones 9-11, (20-50° F), which can be overwintered indoors in cool, sunny areas. Excellent “thriller” color for your summer through fall garden or containers. More colorful varieties are becoming available; look for ‘Fireworks’ and ‘Princess Caroline’.

Care Notes

Grow in sunny areas, well-drained soil or containers. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, Osmocote® or Plant-tone®. Follow label instructions. Foliage will become more colorful and full as the summer progresses. The showy seed heads form in late summer. Cut back and overwinter indoors in a cool, sunny area (55° F). Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
