Brassica oleracea

ornamental, flowering cabbage or kale

About the Ornamental, Flowering Cabbage or Kale

Wavy edged green leaves on compact, rounded plants (cabbage), or more fringed, curled leaves on vase shaped, mounded plants (kale) turn brightly variegated in shades of red, purple, pink and white as the temperatures cool in the fall. They make bold foliage complements to fall mums, ornamental grasses, hardy asters and other fall favorites. Their colorful, textured foliage will persist through winter, but yellows and dies back in spring. Plant in front borders or containers for unique fall and winter color and interest. Care Notes

Grow in sunny areas, well-drained, amended soil or containers. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, Osmocote® or Plant-tone®. Follow label instructions. Trim as needed to maintain a tidy habit. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Remove in spring when foliage yellows.
