Hakonechloa macra

japanese forest grass

About the Japanese Forest Grass

A brilliant, golden yellow ornamental grass that resembles a low growing, cascading bamboo! ‘All Gold’ is slightly more upright and vigorous than its cousin ‘Aureola’ but its clump forming, graceful mounds of foliage are a pure gold to chartreuse, able to brighten any shade garden! Hakonechloa grasses make excellent spillers in containers, Asian or Zen garden accents, or highlight woodland areas combined with ferns, Coral bells, and Astilbe. Care Notes

Plant in part shade to shade, well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Cut back as low as possible early spring. Mulch 1-2” to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
