About the Heirloom Tomato
Heirlooms are considered to be the finest tasting tomatoes with incredible flavors that inspired gardeners to collect and pass the seeds to future generations. There are many unique shapes, sizes and colors of heirloom tomatoes with marbled, meaty flesh, striping and ribbing. There are determinate (bush-type), indeterminate (vine-type), and grafted varieties available as well. Because these tomatoes are old-fashioned, non-hybrids, they do require more care, maintenance and patience in the garden. Those that were specifically selected for Angelo’s Farm Market are the best of the best and extremely flavorful. Look for ‘Brandywine’, ‘Cherokee Purple’, ‘Hillbilly’, ‘Marglobe’, and ‘Mortgage Lifter’.
Care Notes
Plant in sunny, well-drained, nutrient rich soil or containers amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week throughout the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, Osmocote® or Tomato-tone®. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Stake, cage, or trellis as needed.
