About the Forsythia

An old-fashioned favorite with an attractive, upright spreading form. The showy yellow flowers bloom along the long slender stems and appear like deep golden wands in April. An excellent fast growing shrub, ideal for hedge planting, mixed borders, and a backdrop for flowering shrubs and perennials. Several new varieties are available that grow more compact and are densely covered with flowers from base to tip. Care Notes

Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week the first year. Prune in mid-spring after blooming by thinning out crowded stems from center of the plant. Remove one or two old stems from the base to keep plant attractive and free flowering. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
