Catharanthus roseus

flowering vinca, madagascar periwinkle

About the Flowering Vinca, Madagascar Periwinkle

A tough, compact flowering annual that is a great substitute for Impatiens in the sun. Flowers are typically 1.5″ wide with five overlapping petals around a white or rose colored central eye. Colors vary in the rose spectrum, with white, mauve, purple, and better reds being produced each year. Excellent heat and drought tolerance and deer resistance; put them at the top of list for annual bedding plants and container gardens in hot, sunny sites. Care Notes

Grow in sunny areas, well-drained, amended soil or containers. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, Osmocote® or Plant-tone®. Follow label instructions. Repeat flowering, and often self-cleaning, but trim if leggy or stretched to maintain better blooming and a tidy habit. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Plant after the soil heats up in June.
