Chamaecyparis spp.

false cypress

About the False Cypress

The Falsecypress family includes many attractive, soft needle conifer varieties including the popular, bright yellow “gold mop”, plus the unique Hinoki varieties, and the weeping Alaskan Cedar (C. nootkatensis). Some varieties are low and mounded, others are tall and pyramidal in varying shades of green to gold, producing small, globe shaped cones. They add stunning four seasons of color and texture to foundation plantings, shrub borders, and as specimen.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week the first year. Little pruning needed; shapes itself nicely. Remove dead branches at any time. Remove the leader in late winter/early spring to keep compact. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer and fall with an acidic fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
