Dahlia x hybrida

About the Dahlia

Gorgeous and showy, Dahlias can be grown from seed, cuttings or from tubers, which accounts for their 20+ different flower forms, myriad color options and sizes. Dahlias look beautiful in the sunny landscape or mixed container garden as a “filler” or “thriller” plant. Regular deadheading keeps the plant looking clean and enhances it’s continuous blooming.

Care Notes

Grow in sunny, well-drained soil with average moisture. Fertilize regularly with Osmocote (green cap), and deadhead regularly to keep the plant tidy and blooming nicely. If looking to grow XL blooms, pinch off smaller buds and side shoots. Tuberous varieties should be lifted in fall after a few frosts, remove the foliage and stems, let dry and store in a box with dry peat moss in a cool, dry place where temperatures stay above freezing.

Companion Plants

Combine "thriller" Dahlias with other sun loving "spillers", Petunias and Sweet Potato Vine in container gardens. In the landscape, the dwarf dahlias make great edgers in a sunny border, and tuberous dahlias can be planted in the middle border among Cannas and Cleome.
