About the Culinary Sage

Angelo’s Farm Market herbs are specifically selected for home growers to be productive, disease resistant, and flavorful. Look for the colorful, variegated varieties of ‘Golden’, ‘Tricolor’, and ‘Purple’, fruity hummingbird magnet ‘Pineapple’, and the culinary classic ‘Berggarten’. Most culinary sages are perennial with interesting, ornamental foliage producing large, fuzzy to rough textures in the herb garden. Culinary sages are best used as a dried herb that gives many dishes a fresh, traditional taste that is nostalgic on Thanksgiving in poultry, potatoes and stuffing. Great garden companion to tomatoes and rosemary. Can be steeped in teas for a stimulating effect. Provides late fall foliage interest in container gardens planted with mums, pansies, grasses and ornamental kale.

Care Notes

Plant in sunny, well-drained, nutrient rich soil or containers amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week throughout the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, Osmocote® or Garden-tone®. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Harvest 1/3 of the new, tender foliage in the morning. Dry or freeze extra for future use.
