chives

About the Chives

An abundantly easy growing, perennial herb with a mild onion taste that can be used fresh or dried in many dishes along with fish, poultry, veal, eggs, potatoes, salads, soups and many more. Their violet-purple flowers are very decorative and edible flavoring herbal vinegars and oils. Looks for garlic, flat leaf chive ‘New Belt’ too. Chives make excellent growing companions to carrots, roses, and apples while repelling aphids. Part of the Angelo’s Farm Market herbs collection that were specifically selected for home growers to be productive, disease resistant, and flavorful.

Care Notes

Plant in sunny, well-drained, nutrient rich soil or containers amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week throughout the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, Osmocote® or Garden-tone®. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Harvest 1/3 of the new, tender foliage in the morning. Dry or freeze extra for future use.
