About the Blueberry

The best blueberries to grow in Northeast Ohio are high bush varieties that are easy to grow yielding anywhere from small to extra large sized fruit, light blue to navy berries that possess various levels of firmness, and tart, acidic, rich or sweet flavor. Upright, oval habits tend to be covered in white to pink, small bell-like flowers in spring, glossy green foliage and plentiful berries in summer, and spectacular, showy fall foliage colors. Plant with additional blueberries for better yields in sunny spots, edible gardens, as hedges or borders. Many new dwarf, container varieties are also available. Care Notes

Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1” of water once a week the first year. Little pruning is needed. Remove a few old, weak or crowded branches to the ground in late winter/early spring. Fertilize in early spring and mid-summer with Holly-tone®. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2″ to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Choose early, midseason, and late producers to extend your harvest.
