To live their merriest life, succulents want their pots placed in the brightest light you can offer, like on a windowsill or near a sunny window, in average household temperatures. A well-draining cactus potting mix is the optimal medium to mimic their native, sandy soil conditions. Little fertilization is required because succulents naturally grow in nutrient-poor environments. Just be sure to water sparingly and only when completely dried out.

To start your mini display, look for pots 4.5 inches or smaller and tiny succulents like Portulacaria, Peperomia, Crassula (Jade), Senecio (String of…), Echeveria, Aeonium, and Haworthia. Have fun getting creative with groupings by color, style, or size.

Propagating Succulents

Succulents are one of the easiest plant families to care for, even in Northeast Ohio, making them a fantastic option for a “mini” plant collection. Typically slow growers, most varieties of succulents and cacti can be kept in small pots for an extended period of time. Once they start to outgrow their mini pots, they can be transitioned into larger pots, or easily propagated into smaller versions of themselves and replanted in their tiny homes.
